In het Griftpark staat een versie van het Vindhek. Deze unieke uitvoering van het concept heeft te maken met de ontstaansgeschiedenis, in september 2007 vond het eerste gesprek over de realisatie van Vindhek Griftpark plaats. Bijna vier jaar later is nu de feestelijke onthulling. Op het Vindhek komt een bord met de vertaling van het woord Vindhek in 18 talen, waaronder Chinees, Japans, Hongaars, Arabisch, Surinaams en Turks. Die vertalingen zijn geschonken door de meer dan 500 internationale Vrienden van het Vindhek: www.vindhek.com.

The main reason for this high level of multilingualism in Utrecht is the presence of numerous well-educated young people and adults. In addition, many people with a foreign background live in the city. Research shows that people with a foreign background do not speak, on average, more languages than those without a foreign background; however, this diversity of the population in Utrecht brings more languages to the city, making Utrecht a multilingual hotspot in Europe. Next to being such a flourishing hotspot, Utrecht hopes to further utilize its rich linguistic potential.

Our gratitude goes out to Utrecht University for being an important partner in this research. Special thanks goes out to Dr. Borja Martinovic, the author of this research project, who found a way to map and research the multilingual potential of the City of Utrecht.

Aanbieding van het Advies van Saluti; 'Taal in de toekomst, een ander perspectief'

De komende tijd verandert er veel binnen de gemeente Utrecht. De bezuinigingen spelen hierbij een grote rol en op veel gebieden wordt nieuw beleid ontwikkeld. Ook op het gebied van inburgering. Duidelijk wordt dat de gemeente aan veel migranten geen inburgeringcursus meer zal aanbieden. Hiervoor ontbreken simpelweg de middelen. Vandaar dat de gemeente aan Saluti heeft gevraagd om na te gaan welke rol de Utrechtse welzijns- en vrijwilligersorganisaties hierin zouden kunnen spelen.

Saluti heeft daarom op verzoek van de gemeente het advies 'Taal in de toekomst, een ander perspectief' geschreven. Het advies is gebaseerd op een kwalitatief onderzoek dat Saluti heeft verricht onder migranten- en vrijwilligersorganisaties, werkgevers en deskundigen.

Op donderdag 8 december a.s. wordt tevens de Larbi Edriouch Lezing, uitgesproken. De lezing draagt de naam van voormalig directeur Inburgering Gemeente Utrecht en huidige directeur Taalschool Taalwereld +, Larbi Edriouch. Tijdens deze lezing gaat Menno Hurenkamp, Socioloog en onderzoeker aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, in op het onderwerp “ Participatie: plicht of plezier? “

Aansluitend wordt het advies Taalonderwijs in een nieuw perspectief gepresenteerd en aangeboden aan wethouder Rinda den Besten. Tijdens de bijeenkomst wordt er dieper ingegaan op het advies en het taalonderwijs in Utrecht.

Overview
Multilingualism is becoming increasingly important, most notably in the business world. More than two in five European small and medium enterprises are engaging in international activity whilst approximately one quarter are directly involved in export as new markets are emerging. In addition, more and more people move to work in a foreign country.

Dutch people learn from childhood one or more foreign languages at school.
· Is the level of teaching and learning foreign languages in the Netherlands high enough for the international job market?
· Is English sufficient or is it time to pay more attention to other (“real”?) foreign languages, like Russian or Chinese?
· Do international organizations find the right multilingual candidates?
· What is the value of language tests?

Education specialists, recruitment agencies and employers operating in a multilingual environment will present the state of affairs in their fields. They will discuss the current situation and future challenges, make suggestions for improvements and possibilities for collaboration. The meeting is foreseen as a platform for open dialogue with each other and the audience. We would like to look for answers together.

Presentations and discussion will be conducted in Dutch. Please, refer to the attached file for detailed programme.

The afternoon symposium will be preceded by workshops for language testing experts from various language institutes in the Netherlands.

Festival a/d Werf has invited London-based artist Anne Bean to create a new work, inspired by the multitude of languages spoken in Utrecht, and how different cultures contribute to a city’s shifting dynamism, and vice-versa. It started in November 2009 with a poem by Anne about the components of identity. Forty people from twenty linguistic groups then sequentially engaged with the project. The poem travelled through their languages, with Dutch acting as a link between them. Each translation reveals the subtle permutations of meaning and emphasis that each language adds to its evolution. WHOSEYWHATS is realised both in book form, in which readers can follow the ’travelling poem’ and its translators, and in a dynamic kinetic sculptural intervention by designer Gijs van Bon. You will find the machine in the city centre during the festival. This unique poetry project pays homage to the city of Utrecht and its inhabitants, commemorating their hospitality over the 25 years since Festival a/d Werf has existed.

We live in a period of unprecedented movement - of capital, of goods and of people. Contact between people and countries has never been easier or more frequent. In such a changing and volatile world, communication across cultures becomes very high stakes.

Such communication is indispensible for international relations. It underpins wealth creation, enables individual mobility and grows employment. Communication is itself a major economic and cultural activity.

Multilingualism has to play a key role in this world where English has greatly facilitated the global impact of the "communications revolution". However, English – even as a lingua franca - also poses key cultural, social and psychological challenges.

In such a complex world, simple indicators of identity – national citizenship or national culture - are challenged. People share allegiances to an ever widening range of social groups and cultural icons – local, national, religious, sporting, artistic. In each case, language can be a major factor.
The issue of multilingualism has been hotly debated over the last ten two decades, and despite much effort and progress, the way we first apply theory to policy, and then put the resulting policies into practice can still have varying results.

This project aims to address these issues and formulate the questions which need to be asked to help language policy have a more central role in national and international policy debates.

The LETPP project brings together decision makers and stakeholders in business, education and government to look at case-studies, exchange ideas and consider actions. We can then start to decide what the next steps need to be to "unlock the gates of languages" to the citizens of the next decade.

City2City International Literature in Utrecht

Het literaire huzarenstukje is gelukt: City2Cities Internationale Literatuurdagen Utrecht is een feit. Het literatuurfestival heeft tot doel Utrecht, één van de oudste steden van Nederland en met een lange literaire traditie, op culturele wijze samen te brengen met twee andere (Europese) steden. City2Cities zal circa drie weken duren, steeds in april van elk jaar. De eerste editie zal in 2011 plaats vinden.

Utrecht kent al decennia lang diverse toonaangevende en innovatieve literaire evenementen van organisaties als Stichting Literaire Activiteiten (SLAU), het Poëziecircus en Salon Saffier, die in City2Cities hun krachten zullen bundelen. Ook zal worden samengewerkt met de Universiteit van Utrecht, de Stichting Vrede van Utrecht (2013), Utrecht Your Way en andere culturele instellingen. Deze samenwerking is uniek. Het evenement zal een première in Nederland zijn voor een groots internationaal opgezet literatuurfestival.

City2Cities schept op deze manier in Utrecht ruimte voor een ontmoeting tussen twee literaire wereldsteden, waarin visies op identiteit, cultuur en politiek vanuit een literair perspectief tot uitdrukking komen. Er zullen debatten over literaire stadscultuur plaats vinden met schrijvers uit de drie steden/landen en expertmeetings tussen literaire critici, letterkundigen, uitgevers en vertalers. Ook zullen een festivalfilm over een Nederlandse dichter of schrijver die de twee gaststeden bezoekt, en een festivaluitgave met essays en nog niet eerder vertaalde verhalen en gedichten over de dialoog tussen de drie steden worden geproduceerd. Concerten en theater zijn in the fringe voorzien.

Voorts spelen internet en de nieuwe media een belangrijke rol: audiovisuele registraties en informatie over schrijvers zullen in het Nederlands en het Engels raadpleegbaar zijn. Bij de eerste editie van City2Cities in 2011 staan Barcelona en Stockholm centraal, in 2012 Lissabon en Praag en in 2013 Londen en Berlijn.

The study of the languages used in signs can contribute to the study of linguistic diversity. It can reflect the different strengths of the languages and the relative integration of their speakers. The languages of signs are also related to identity and to language policy. The effects of multilingualism, in fact, have recently come to the forefront of public policy debates. Political reality shows that linguistic issues and, in particular, the treatment of minority languages are almost unparalleled in terms of their explosiveness and emotional appeal, much more than any other question of resource allocation or responsibility sharing within a polity. In fact, multilingualism or linguistic diversity in a heterogeneous society provide extraordinary challenges and room for policies which may have important economic implications in shaping the flows of interregional or international trade, investment and migrations. Multilingualism or linguistic diversity in a society is an important phenomenon that can generate gains or losses resulting from the economic interactions between individuals, regions or countries. This paper will focus on the study of linguistic diversity in the linguistic landscape from an interdisciplinary perspective: sociolinguistic and economic.

The European Urban Knowledge Network facilitates the exchange of demand-driven knowledge and experience on urban issues. EUKN supports policy makers and practitioners across Europe in developing effective urban policy and to promote the vitality of Europe’s towns and cities. 17 EU Member States, EUROCITIES, the URBACT Programme and the European Commission participate in EUKN.

Since becoming a National Science Digital Library collection in 2004, the Rosetta Archive has more than doubled its collection size, now serving nearly 100,000 pages of material documenting over 2,500 languages—the largest resource of its kind on the Net.

Just as globalization threatens human cultural diversity, the languages of small, unique, localized human societies are at serious risk. In fact, linguists predict that we may lose as much as 90% of the world’s linguistic diversity within the next century. Language is both an embodiment of human culture, as well as the primary means of its maintenance and transmission. When languages are lost, the transmission of traditional culture is often abruptly severed meaning the loss of cultural diversity is tightly connected to loss of linguistic diversity. To stem the tide and help reverse this trend, we are working to promote human cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as to make sure that no language vanishes without a trace.

Mit der feierlichen Unterzeichnung eines Kooperationsvertrages haben Bezirksregierung Köln, Stadt Köln und Universität zu Köln am 8. April 2008 den Aufbau des „Zentrums für Mehrsprachigkeit und Integration“ (ZMI) vereinbart. Damit ziehen in Köln – in unserer Stadt, in der Menschen aus 180 Nationen leben und in deren Schulen mehr als die Hälfte der Kinder und Jugendlichen eine Zuwanderungsgeschichte haben – drei starke Partner nun gemeinsam an einem Strang: Im ZMI führen Bezirksregierung, Stadt und Universität ihr Engagement für Köln unter dem Dach einer einzigen Institution so zusammen, wie es in Deutschland bislang noch nicht versucht wurde.

Und diese Zusammenarbeit hat ihre Bewährungsprobe bereits bestanden. Das „Kompetenzzentrum Sprachförderung“, von 2004 bis 2007 als EQUAL-Projekt von der EU finanziert, wies die Richtung. Erstmals im Rahmen des Kompetenzzentrums wurden in Köln die vielfältigen Aktivitäten zur Sprachförderung, insbesondere für Kinder und Jugendliche mit Migrationshintergrund, institutionell zusammengeführt.

Auf der Grundlage der dabei gewonnenen positiven Erfahrungen verpflichteten sich die drei Kooperationspartner Bezirksregierung, Stadt und Universität zum Ende des Jahres 2007 zu einer verbindlichen, das meint auf Dauer angelegten und vor allem auf Nachhaltigkeit ausgerichteten Zusammenarbeit in (nur noch) einer gemeinsamen Einrichtung – jenseits der Grenzen, die der Projektstatus mit sich bringt. Das ZMI sieht sich in der Nachfolge wie in der Tradition des Kompetenzzentrums – jedoch mit einer nun weitergefassten inhaltlichen Fokussierung darauf, dass die natürliche Mehrsprachigkeit von Menschen mit Zuwanderungsgeschichte eine wichtige Ressource für das Zusammenleben darstellt: Mehrsprachigkeit wird begriffen und offensiv vertreten als große Chance, insbesondere für Bildungseinrichtungen.

A year in the making, the TED Open Translation Project brings TEDTalks beyond the English-speaking world by offering subtitles, time-coded transcripts and the ability for any talk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. The project launched with 300 translations in 40 languages, and 200 volunteer translators.

The TED Open Translation Project is one of the most comprehensive attempts by a major media platform to subtitle and index online video content. It’s also a groundbreaking effort in the public, professional use of volunteer translation.

Subtitles and transcripts
Every talk on TED.com will now have English subtitles, which can be toggled on or off by the user. The number of additional languages varies from talk to talk, based on the number of volunteers who elected to translate it.

Along with subtitles, every talk on TED.com now features a time-coded, interactive transcript, which allows users to select any phrase and have the video play from that point. The transcripts are fully indexable by search engines, exposing previously inaccessible content within the talks themselves. For example, searching on Google for "green roof" will ultimately help you find the moment in architect William McDonough's talk when he discusses Ford's River Rouge plant, and also the moment in Majora Carter's talk when she speaks of her green roof project in the South Bronx. Transcripts will index in all available languages.

The interplay between the video, subtitles and transcript create what we call a Rosetta Stone effect. You can watch, for example, an English talk, with Korean subtitles and an Urdu transcript. Click on an Urdu phrase in the transcript, and the speaker will say it to you in English, with Korean subtitles running right-to-left below. It’s captivating.

The translations
Rather than simply translate a few talks into a handful of major languages, TED and technology partner, dotSUB developed a set of tools that allow participants around the world to translate their favorite talks into their own language. This approach is scalable, and -- importantly -- allows speakers of less-dominant languages an equal opportunity to spread ideas within their communities.

To seed the site, a handful of talks were professionally translated into 20 languages. But all translations going forward will be provided by volunteers. At launch, volunteer translators had already contributed more than 200 published translations (with 450 more in development). These volunteers range from well-organized groups working together in their own language, to lone translators working individually and matched by TED with others.

At launch, the Open Translation Project included 300 translations, in 40 languages, including Arabic, Basque, Bengali, Bulgarian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hausa, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Kirghiz, Korean, Macedonian, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese. Our translators hail from cities from Beijing to Buenos Aires; Tehran to Tel Aviv; Espoo, Finland, to Barranquilla, Colombia.

To help ensure quality, we generate an approved, professional English transcript for each talk. (This is the transcript upon which all translations are based.) Once the talk is translated, we then require every translation to be reviewed by a second fluent speaker before publishing it on TED. TED controls the final "publish" button. All translators and reviewers are credited by name for their work. After publication, we provide feedback mechanisms for ongoing discussion or improvement around the translation.

Zaterdag 21 november waren Marloes en ik aanwezig op een congres van het Genootschat Onze Taal. Het thema van de dag was "Grenzeloos Nederland". Welke invloed hebben talen op het Nederlands? Met een straattaalse 'Wazz up lingofreaks' opende H.K.H. Prinses Laurentien de dag. Minister Van der Laan ging in op het belang van de Nederlandse taal bij inburgering en integratie. Schrijfster Kristien Hemmerechts gaf op grappige wijze de verschillen weer tussen het Nederlands en Belgisch Nederlands, zoals stappen (met laarsen aan flink te keer gaan i.t.t. uitgaan), doorgaan (weggaan i.t.t. ermee door gaan) en dooddoen (uitdoen zoals bijv. het licht i.t.t. dood gaan). Verder gaf ze een mooi voorbeeld van de vele synoniemen van het werkwoord praten, zoals kletsen, keuvelen, lullen etc.. Maar 'luisteren' kent eigenlijk geen synoniem. Ze riep op om vooral naar elkaar te blijven luisteren! Sharon Unsworth, taalonderzoeker aan de UU benadrukte de voordelen van meertaligheid. Zo zijn meertalige mensen bijvoorbeeeld creatiever. Meertaligheid leidt volgens haar niet tot taalachterstand. Volgens de onderzoeker is het van belang de thuistaal goed te beheersen (bijv. door voor te lezen), dat maakt het leren van een 2e taal makkelijker. Tot slot hebben we het woord van het jaar gekozen: twitteren!

New website on first European Survey on Language Competences

A new website offers information about the project of carrying out a Europe-wide survey on language competences. The survey is an initiative of the European Commission to support the development of language learning policies across Europe. The survey will be carried out in 2011 and the first results are expected for 2012. The survey is implemented by the Consortium SurveyLang composed of the following partners: University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations - coordinator, Centre International d'Etudes Pédagogiques (CIEP), Goethe-Institut, Instituto Cervantes, National Institute for Educational Measurement (CITO), Gallup, Universidad de Salamanca and Universita per Stranieri di Perugia.The survey has been prepared in close co-operation with national authorities across the EU. Its results will provide policy-makers, teachers and practitioners with reliable comparative data on foreign language competences across the EU. It will also offer information on how demographic, social, economic and educational factors affect language proficiency.The data collected in the survey will also be used to construct an indicator which will allow the EU to measure progress towards its objective of improving the learning and teaching of foreign languages across Europe.The new website on the survey is currently available in English, with French, German, Italian and Spanish versions to be added shortly. Factsheets on the survey are available in the five languages as well as materials that will allow participating teachers and students to familiarise themselves with test.

Workshops on bilingualism and bilingual children

Raising a child bilingually is not always an easy task. Research has shown that raising children bilingually can have many advantages. Indeed, bringing up a bilingual child can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can sometimes require patience and self-discipline. It can also raise many questions. While we do not (yet) know the answers to all these questions, there are several clear-cut findings which have emerged from research with bilingual children in the past years.

In the first part of this 1.5 hour session, researchers from Utrecht Institute of Linguistics, Sharon Unsworth and Ivana Brasilero, will discuss some of these findings. In the second part, the audience will have the opportunity to raise questions relating to bilingual children and bilingualism.

This session is intended for parents, educators, expats, speech language therapists, trainee teachers and anyone with a general interest in bilingualism and bilingual children.

Attendance is free, but the number of places is limited. Please register in advance.

De Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen kent de Keetje Hodshon Prijs 2009 toe aan taalwetenschapper dr. Sharon Unsworth. De prijs is bedoeld als aanmoediging voor recent gepromoveerde onderzoekers, ter bekroning van oorspronkelijk onderzoek op het gebied van de geesteswetenschappen.

Jaarlijks wordt de Keetje Hodshon Prijs, bestaand uit een bedrag van 12.000 euro, toegekend in één van de categorieën Taalwetenschappen, Literatuurwetenschappen, Historische wetenschappen, of Wijsbegeerte en/of Godgeleerdheid. In 2009 is de onderscheiding bestemd voor onderzoek op het gebied van de taalwetenschappen. De prijs is vernoemd naar mejuffrouw Cornelia Catharina (Keetje) Hodshon, die in 1794 het huidige gebouw van de Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen liet bouwen en tot 1829 de eerste bewoonster ervan was.

Sharon Unsworth is als universitair docent verbonden aan de opleidng Engels van het departement Moderne Talen, en als onderzoeker verbonden aan het Utrecht Institute of Linguistics (UiL OTS). Haar onderzoek richt zich op taalverwerving en tweetaligheid bij jonge kinderen. Met een VENI-subsidie van NWO is ze in 2008 het project The role of age and input in early child bilingualism begonnen.

The story behind sexy men with a language

LONDEN - Het Franse accent doet de vrouwen niet langer smelten. Het zijn de Iers-talige en Italiaanse mannen die de meisjesharten doen smelten. Het Schotse accent staat op de derde plaats van meest sexy taal.

Wereldwijd werd aan 5000 vrouwen gevraagd wat ze het meest sexy accent vonden. De Fransen eindigden pas op een vierde plaats, gevolgd door de Australiërs, Engelsen, Zweden, Spanjaarden en Amerikanen. Het Nederlands kwam in de lijst niet voor.

Zes op tien vrouwen gaven toe wel eens enkel en alleen op het accent van een man te zijn gevallen. Het feit dat Frankrijk zijn koppositie als meest sexy taal te hebben verloren komt volgens de onderzoekers door de als arrogant bestempelde Franse president Nicolas Sarkozy. De Ieren hebben hun overwinning waarschijnlijk te danken aan acteurs als Colin Farrell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers en James Nesbitt.

Baby's huilen op de melodie van hun moedertaal

WÜRZBERG - Dat hebben Duitse wetenschappers ontdekt en in het vakblad Current Biology beschreven. ,,De nieuwgeborenen gebruiken vooral de melodie die typisch is voor hun moedertaal'', aldus de leider van het onderzoeksteam uit Würzberg donderdag. De wetenschappers onderzochten zestig baby's van drie tot vijf dagen oud uit Duitsland en Frankrijk. Microfoontjes registreerden het babygehuil, dat door een computer geanalyseerd werd. Duitse baby's beginnen vaker op maximale toonhoogte te huilen en zwakken dat af. Bij Franse baby's is dat andersom. De Franse taal heeft een ander ritme dan bijvoorbeeld Nederlands of Duits en dat is aan het huilen te horen.De onderzoekers hopen dat de ontdekking mogelijk kan helpen een spraakgebrek vroegtijdig op te sporen. Talent Talen is opgericht door Drs. Gisa Muniz. Zij is Braziliaanse, taalkundige en studeerde Portugees in São Paulo en aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. In de loop der jaren specialiseerde ze zich in de verschillen tussen het Braziliaanse en Europese Portugees. Zij schreef in 2002 het boek Portugees voor Zelfstudie, derde editie in 2007, uitgeverij Het Spectrum, Utrecht. Haar zelfstudie methode legt de didactische basis voor een aantal uitgaves uit deze PRISMA Taaltraining zelfstudie serie: Spaans voor Zelfstudie (een bewerkte vertaling van Portugees voor Zelfstudie, op haar naam uitgegeven), Engels voor Zelfstudie, Frans voor Zelfstudie en Duits voor Zelfstudie. Wilt u op uw school ook vakinhoud in het Engels, Duits of Frans aanbieden? En kunt u het zo organiseren dat dat voor minimaal twee en maximaal vier uur per week op het rooster staat in alle groepen (maximaal 15% van de onderwijstijd)? Geef u dan op voor het pilot-project 15% vvto.

Het pilot-project 15% vvto komt voort uit een advies van de Onderwijsraad van juni 2008. Hierin adviseert de Onderwijsraad om een wetswijziging te maken waardoor basisscholen Engels, Duits of Frans als voertaal mogen gebruiken in maximaal vijftien procent van de onderwijstijd. Omdat het Ministerie van Onderwijs graag wil weten of Nederlandse basisscholen dit willen, maar vooral ook of dit mogelijk is, start in januari 2010 het proefproject waarbij de deelnemende scholen via een speciale experimentenwet ontheffing krijgen om gedurende drie jaar vakinhoud in een vreemde taal aan te bieden. Naar aanleiding van de resultaten van het proefproject wordt bepaald of de wetswijziging er komt, zodat er in de toekomst meer scholen vakinhoud kunnen geven in een vreemde taal.

Meer informatie over het project vindt u onder Pilot-project 15% vvto. U kunt zich daar opgeven door het aanmeldformulier in te vullen en op te sturen naar het Ministerie. Na selectie kunnen per 1 januari 2010 dertig scholen beginnen aan dit project.

"Wer mehrere Sprachen beherrscht, ist ein Gewinn für Wien", so Georg Kraft-Kinz und Ali Rahimi, Obleute und Initiatoren des Vereins Wirtschaft für Integration (VWFI). Mit Beginn des Schuljahres 2009/2010 startet ein vom VWFI neugeschaffener, mehrsprachiger Redewettbewerb für Schülerinnen und Schüler aus ganz Wien ab der siebenten Schulstufe. Mitorganisator ist der Verein EDUCULT.

Die Besonderheit: am Wettbewerb „Sag´s multi!“ können nur SchülerInnen teilnehmen, deren Erstsprache nicht Deutsch ist. Denn: Der VWFI hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, das Sprachpotential von Kindern aus zugewanderten Familien zu fördern. Der Redewettbewerb wird von UNIQA gesponsert und findet in Kooperation mit dem Wiener Stadtschulrat statt.Generaldirektor Konstantin Klien begründet das Engagement des Hauptsponsors UNIQA: „Von Österreich ausgehend sind die Versicherungsunternehmen der UNIQA Gruppe heute in 20 europäische Länder und bis in den arabischen Raum hinein aktiv. Zusätzlich gibt es zehn konkretere Unterthemen. Über ein Thema ihrer Wahl sollen die beteiligten SchülerInnen in sechs bis acht-minütigen Kurzvorträgen sprechen und so ihre rhetorischen Fähigkeiten unter Beweis stellen. Innerhalb des jeweiligen Vortrags muss zwischen der Erstsprache der SchülerInnen, diese kann zum Beispiel Türkisch, Serbisch, Arabisch etc. sein und der deutschen Sprache abgewechselt werden.Der dreistufige Wettbewerb „Sag´s multi!“ beginnt im neuen Schuljahr. Jede beteiligte Schule kann bis zu drei SchülerInnen für die Teilnahme nominieren. Diese SchülerInnen treten im Monat November in mehreren Regionalausscheidungen an, bei denen es bereits wertvolle Sachpreise zu gewinnen gibt.Die Gewinner der Regionalausscheidungen nehmen an der Endausscheidung teil.

Im Rahmen dieser Endausscheidung wird eine prominent besetzte Jury die Gewinner des Wettbewerbs küren. Diese erhalten wertvolle Preise. At the initiative of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, the European Day of Languages is celebrated since 2001 on September 26th.

Throughout Europe, 800 million Europeans represented in the Council of Europe 47 member states are encouraged to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school. Being convinced that linguistic diversity is a tool for more intercultural understanding and a key element of the rich cultural heritage of our continent, the Council of Europe promotes multilinguism in whole Europe.

On the occasion of the day, a range of events are organised across Europe: happenings for and with children, television and radio programmes, language classes and conferences. National authorities and the various partners are given a free hand to organise activities. To coordinate the activities organised at national level, the Council of Europe asks participating countries to nominate "National Relay Persons" for the day.

Docenten die in de stille uurtjes hun salaris willen opschroeven, kunnen vanaf vandaag terecht op internet. Myngle.com biedt ze een marktplaats om studenten te werven en een elektronisch ‘klaslokaal’ om taallessen te geven.

Les wordt gegeven op een elektronisch schoolbord, waarop de docent zijn materiaal presenteert. Het is het enige stukje software dat Myngle zelf heeft ontwikkeld. Voor het overige maakt het Amsterdamse bedrijfje gebruik van bestaande technologieën. Docenten en cursisten praten via elkaar met Skype – de grootste aanbieder van (gratis) internettelefonie. Het cursusgeld kan worden overgemaakt met eBays virtuele bank PayPal.

Myngle leeft van de provisie van docenten. Die bedraagt 18 procent. Een Braziliaanse onderwijzer vroeg Van Keulen wat hij voor zijn lessen zou kunnen rekenen. De suggestie van 15 euro per uur klonk de Braziliaan als muziek in de oren. ‘Dat is meer dan wat hij krijgt als hij voor de klas staat.’

This Conference is the launching event of a campaign on early language learning. The aim of the conference is to identify and raise awareness of the benefits of early language learning and to discuss the related challenges. The Conference is expected to demonstrate the benefits of early language learning as well as to present examples of good practice to counter prejudices relating to early language learning. Experts will provide advice on the best conditions for achieving results in early language learning.

The main themes of the Conference will be: the state of the art of research on language acquisition in early childhood, existing good practice in early language learning and language learners with special needs. The target audience of the Conference are experts researching in early language learning and representatives of initiatives and authorities working in this field as well as delegates from relevant associations of stakeholders such as educators and parents. The conference languages will be English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Dichterbijhuis, een bijzonder initiatief in de Utrechtse Dichterswijk.
Onthulling door wethouder Marka Spit op vrijdag 12 juni, 17.00 uur.

Er komen dichtregels en portretten van Cats, Hooft, Huijgens en Da Costa op de muren in de Jacob Catsstraat!

Fotografen uit de buurt hebben in de afgelopen winter honderden buurtbewoners gefotografeerd, bij hun voordeur of ergens in de straat, alleen, met het hele gezin of met de buren. Deze foto’s worden klein afgedrukt en zo’n 600 foto’s vormen een portret van een dichter. Vanaf de overkant van de straat zie je een groot portret van de dichter, kom je er dichtbij, dan zie je bekende gezichten. ‘Nieuwe gezichten bij oude gedichten’ dus, het zijn immers de bewoners, die het veranderende gezicht van de Dichterswijk bepalen.

Heel veel talen
Onder de portretten – op straatniveau – komen er dichtregels op de muur. De keuze van de dichtregels en hoe en waar ze op de muur zouden komen, is uitgebreid besproken tijdens het maandelijkse ‘Dichterscafé’ en op een feestelijke bijeenkomst in de straat. De definitieve keuze is bepaald met huis-aan-huis verspreide stembiljetten en bekend gemaakt op een bijeenkomst op Gedichtendag 2009. De regels zijn vertaald in de moedertalen van een aantal bewoners. Cats, Huijgens, Hooft en Da Costa hebben het vast niet durven dromen: hun dichtregels levensgroot op de muur in het Russisch, Engels, Duits, Italiaans, Chinees, Arabisch, Kroatisch en Turks. En wij zijn er in de buurt erg leuk samen mee bezig geweest!

Wijk doet naam eer aan
Op verschillende andere plaatsen in de Dichterswijk staan al gedichten op de muur: In de Coornhertstraat in steen gehouwen regels van deze dichter. Een sms-gedicht van Ingmar Heytze in de Heycopstraat en een gedicht van Aziz Araab (in Nederlands en Tamazight) in de Tesselschadestraat. In verschillende andere straten worden plannen gemaakt voor gedichten op de muur. UitvoeringKunstenaars en buurtbewoners zijn momenteel bezig met het schilderen van de regels op de muren in de Jacob Catsstraat. Op maandag 18 mei is met de werkzaamheden begonnen, op 29 mei moet het kunstwerk af zijn. Met een hoogwerker worden de enorme portretten op de muren gemonteerd, ter hoogte van de 1e etage.

The Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS (UiL OTS) at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, hosts the 7th International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB7) from July, 8 - 11, 2009.

The first and second editions of the bi-annual International Symposium on Bilingualism were organised in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) in 1997 and 1999, respectively, and ISB3 took place in Bristol. After 2003, ISB left the UK and in 2003, Arizona State University hosted ISB4. ISB5 was held in Barcelona in 2005, and in 2007, Hamburg hosted ISB6.

Oslo will be the venue for ISB8 in 2011. With 500-700 participants nowadays, ISB has developed into one of the most important conferences in the field of bilingualism worldwide.
